Crawl space ventilation

To maintain a healthy moisture balance for the construction, crawl space ventilation is important. Of course, it is also pleasant to prevent the accumulation of unwanted gases and/or vapors, especially for the health of maintenance personnel.

What is crawl space ventilation?

Beneath the ground floor of many homes lies a crawl space: an enclosed, low-lying area between the floor and the ground. Crawl space ventilation ensures a constant flow of air through this space via openings in the facade. This allows moist air to escape while drier outside air is brought in. This is achieved using grilles, ducts, or shafts that are fitted into the facade to match the building situation.

Why is crawl space ventilation important?

If this air circulation is absent, moisture builds up in the crawl space. Over time, this leads to mould growth, wood rot, and an unpleasant odour that can seep into the home through the floor. Proper ventilation prevents these problems and keeps your home's structure healthy. At Tilmar you'll find a complete range for crawl space ventilation, for both new-build and renovation projects.

Floor ventilation ducts, grilles, or a cuckoo vent: what suits your project?

For new-build projects, where ventilation is factored in during construction, our FlexVent-HV air vent are the standard choice, which can be combined with a stainless steel brick grille if desired for a sleek facade finish. For renovation or repair of existing openings, our renovation grilles and tubes offer a solution, without the need for any demolition work. Is the ventilation opening located below ground level, for example with a deep crawl space? Then a basement well is the right solution. Does the opening need to be above ground level instead, for extra protection against rainwater? Then a ventilation shaft is the way to go.

How much ventilation does your crawl space need?

The required ventilation opening depends on the floor surface area and the type of floor construction, and must be distributed across at least two opposite facades to guarantee proper airflow. On the product pages, you'll find guidelines for each solution to help determine the right amount. Also read our blog The importance of good crawl space ventilation explained for a detailed explanation of the guidelines and a calculation example.
