Roof ventilation for a healthy and sustainable building

Roof ventilation ensures the removal of warm, humid or polluted air through the roof of a building or structure. By extracting air in a controlled manner, moisture problems, condensation and mould growth are reduced. Effective roof ventilation is used in houses, apartments, commercial buildings, industrial buildings, technical rooms and agricultural buildings. Depending on the application, this may involve ventilation of indoor spaces through the roof or ventilation of the roof structure itself. In addition, protection against birds, insects and other pests often plays an important role.

Roof ventilation can be designed in different ways. A distinction is made between mechanical (active) ventilation, natural (passive) ventilation and hybrid solutions that combine both principles. Within natural ventilation, thermal uplift of warm air (convection) or pressure differences, also referred to as draught, are used.

Why is good roof ventilation important?

A poorly ventilated roof can lead to moisture accumulation, condensation and reduced performance of insulation materials. Especially in pitched roofs, ventilated roof structures and spaces where warm air rises, good air circulation is of great importance. By removing moisture and heat in a controlled manner, the structure remains drier, the risk of mould growth is reduced and the building remains more comfortable and energy-efficient.

What solutions are available for roof ventilation?

Roof ventilation is used to remove warm, humid or polluted air from a building or ventilation duct in a controlled manner. Depending on the situation, natural draught, wind energy or a combination of both can be used. By improving air extraction, moisture problems are reduced, air quality is improved and the ventilation system continues to function effectively under changing weather conditions. For these applications, Tilmar offers various solutions, ranging from wind-driven ventilators to rain caps and roof terminals for ventilation ducts and chimneys.

The Silairo wind-driven ventilator uses wind energy to improve air extraction in ventilation ducts. Thanks to its low-friction construction, additional negative pressure is created in the ventilation duct, allowing warm, humid or polluted air to be extracted more effectively.

The Aspirotor has been developed for chimneys with poor draught. The rotating turbine creates negative pressure inside the duct, preventing downdraughts.

The VT Ventinox is a fully stainless steel wind-driven rotor with a low-friction bearing construction. The system operates from low wind speeds and is used in houses, offices, schools and industrial buildings. The rotor is maintenance-free and available in various connection sizes.

The GEK stainless steel roof cowl is a robust stainless steel roof terminal that provides a durable finish for ventilation ducts passing through the roof. Thanks to its weather vane function, the GEK automatically positions itself in the optimum wind direction. The resulting negative pressure improves the draught in the ventilation duct and enhances air extraction. It operates from wind speeds as low as 1 m/s.

The stainless steel rain cap with mesh is designed for installation on ventilation ducts and chimneys. The rain cap protects against rain ingress while allowing ventilation to continue, maintaining good airflow and reducing the risk of moisture problems inside the duct. The integrated small animal mesh also keeps out birds, leaves and other debris.

How do you ventilate a roof structure while keeping pests out?

A well-ventilated roof structure helps remove moisture and heat from the roof construction. This prevents condensation, mould growth and deterioration of building materials. At the same time, it is important that ventilation openings remain protected against birds, rodents, insects and other pests. For these applications, Tilmar offers various ventilation profiles, ventilation strips and pest protection products that combine ventilation with protection. These solutions are used for roof edges, ridge constructions, corrugated roofs and the junctions between façades and roofs.

The VentiStrip stainless steel ventilation profiles have been developed for structural ventilation. The 3 mm ventilation slots provide ventilation while preventing pests from entering the construction. Stainless steel offers a durable solution that does not age or become brittle.

The VentiStrip XL-75 has been developed for situations where a larger ventilation opening is required. This makes the profile suitable for various roof and façade details requiring a higher free airflow. Compared with other bird stop solutions, the VentiStrip XL-75 stands out because of its high-quality stainless steel construction. Stainless steel is considerably more durable and forms an impenetrable barrier against small rodents.

The stainless steel ventilation strip provides a continuous ventilation opening in roof and façade constructions. At the same time, it prevents birds and pests from entering the construction. Thanks to its black coating, the stainless steel ventilation strip is barely visible, providing a neat and discreet finish.

Corrugated roof profiles provide an effective closure beneath corrugated roofs and help prevent birds and small animals from nesting underneath the roof. They are used in various roof constructions and serve as an alternative to traditional bird stops.

The VentiBrush pest protection brush prevents birds and pests from nesting beneath roof tiles, in roof edges or beneath solar panels, while maintaining ventilation. The brushes are available in different diameters and can easily be connected together for greater lengths.

Which roof ventilation solution is suitable for your project?

For extracting air through ventilation ducts, chimneys or technical installations, wind-driven ventilators, rain caps and roof terminals are the most suitable solution. These include the Silairo, Aspirotor, VT Ventinox, GEK stainless steel roof cowl and stainless steel rain cap.

For ventilating roof structures and preventing moisture problems within the roof construction, ventilation profiles, ventilation strips and pest protection products are the appropriate choice. Products such as the VentiStrip, VentiStrip XL-75, stainless steel ventilation strip, corrugated roof profiles and VentiBrush combine ventilation with protection against birds and other pests.
